Simone Boon
NDSM-plein 111, Kunststad NDSM LOODS, ground floor)
Recalling sensory impressions from a past spent travelling between far-flung places, Simone Boon’s photographic compositions express a painterly attention to tone, form and feeling.
Her photographic arrangements quietly evade the descriptive and static function of the medium, lending her images a filmic sense of temporal passage and transformation, where suggestion takes precedence over statement. Duration is distilled into a single image. Traced across brief intervals, gestures dissolve into fluid abstraction.
Many of Boon’s photographs record only the briefest transition. The resulting tension—between revealing and concealing the shifting subject—evokes both the indeterminacy of being and the continuous present: of life unfolding across time and space.
The work Where Light Meets Time, as shown above, is currently on display at Palazzo Mora in Venice as part of the ECC Contemporary Biennale exhibition. The title refers to the metaphorical notion that ‘at the speed of light, time dissolves’—evoking an eternal present in which past and future melt together.
About the artist: Simone Boon studied Photography and Ceramics at the RMIT where she graduated with a Master of Fine Art (MFA) in 2010.
