“Wij nodigen bezoekers uit om binnen ASCENDING plaats te nemen en de tijd te nemen om tot rust te komen in de ruimte. Geniet van de stilte, de lichtinval, de patronen op de doeken, en van natuurlijk de planten - het zijn er meer dan 1000 klimende windes.

Wij noemen ASCENDING een groene kathedraal maar de echte kathedraal is de ‘Noordstrook’ zelf. In deze industriële kathedraal neemt ASCENDING de plaats van het hoogkoor, de meest heilige plaats en de locatie van het altaar. Echter is ASCENDING niet verbonden aan een enkele specifieke religieuze stroming. De afmetingen en proporties van ASCENDING zijn geïnspireerd door de principes van de gotische architectuur, dat zelf gebaseerd is op nog oudere islamitische bouwwerken. In de jute panelen die de ruimte van ASCENDING omsluiten zijn symbolen verwerkt die refereren aan zogenaamde heilige geometrie, wiskunde principes van schoonheid en harmonie. De groei en afsterven van de planten tijdens de loop van de installatie weerspiegelt de natuurlijke cyclus van de seizoenen en van leven en dood. In het centrum van ASCENDING is het mysterieuze en duizenden jaar oude symbool de Sri Yantra, symbool voor het ontstaan van het universum.

Als makers geloven wij dat kunst transformatieve krachten heeft dat onze kijk op de realiteit kan veranderen, openen en verdiepen. Met ASCENDING onderzoeken wij de relatie tussen fysiek en metafysische ruimte en verkennen wij in hoeverre kunst en architectuur transcendente functies kunnen bevatten. ASCENDING raakt aan actuele en voor ons urgente kwesties: de behoefte aan saamhorigheid en gemeenschap in een tijd van vergaande individualisering; het verband tussen verleden, heden en de toekomst; het verlangen naar zingeving en de noodzaak voor ontzag, schoonheid en bewondering. Met het werk maken wij ook een pleidooi voor het behouden van open, onbenutte ruimte. De pioniers van de kunstenaars gemeenschap zagen al decennia terug de intrinsieke waarde van deze ‘lege’ ruimte waarin de gelaagde geschiedenis van de NDSM nog tastbaar is. Voor ons is dit schijnbaar nutteloze onderdeel van de loods een plek die de ziel kan raken; het is een toevluchtsoord, wat een andere betekenis is van ‘vrijplaats’ in het Engels: refuge. De ruimte die ASCENDING schept, draait niet om consumptie of commercie maar om verbeelding en ervaring. Wij geloven dat mensen zulke ruimtes en kunstwerken van formaat nodig hebben, en dat de tendens om alle beschikbare ruimte in te vullen en te kapitaliseren, ons echter verarmt als individuen en als maatschappij.

Bezoekers van ASCENDING hoeven niet alle achterliggende gedachtes met ons te delen, het kunstwerk biedt ook ruimte aan toeschouwers om zelf een eigen invulling aan de beleving te geven. Wij hopen dat velen zullen er van de ruimte zullen genieten en, al is het maar vluchtig, zich onderdeel voelen van de gemeenschap van ASCENDING.

We call ASCENDING a green cathedral, but the real cathedral is the 'North Strip' itself. In this industrial cathedral, ASCENDING takes the place of the choir, the most sacred place and the location of the altar. However, ASCENDING is not affiliated with any specific religious movement. The dimensions and proportions of ASCENDING are inspired by the principles of Gothic architecture, itself based on even older Islamic structures. In the jute panels that enclose the space of ASCENDING, symbols have been incorporated that refer to so-called sacred geometry, mathematical principles of beauty and harmony. The growth and death of the plants during the course of installation reflects the natural cycle of the seasons and of life and death. In the center of ASCENDING is placed the mysterious symbol the Sri Yantra, which is more than 5000 years old and symbolizes the origin of the universe.

As creators, we believe that art has transformative powers that can change, open and deepen our view of reality. With ASCENDING we investigate the relationship between physical and metaphysical space and explore the extent to which art and architecture can contain transcendent functions. ASCENDING touches on current issues that are urgent for us: the need for togetherness and community in a time of far-reaching individualization; the link between past, present and future; the desire for meaning and the need for awe, beauty and admiration. With the work we also make a plea for preserving open, unused space. The space ASCENDING creates is not about consumption or commerce but about imagination and experience. We believe that people need such large spaces and works of art, and that the tendency to fill and capitalize all available space, however, impoverishes us as individuals and as a society.

Visitors to ASCENDING do not have to share all the underlying thoughts with us, the artwork also offers spectators space to give their own interpretation to the experience. We hope many will enjoy the space and, if only briefly, feel part of the ASCENDING community.”
