Eric Rutgrink 2026

I’m interested in the palimpsest that is life. Things being laid over previous things. An accumulation of marks over time or new realities over old.  While we can do our best to create a new tabula rasa, the process of clearing space can never remove what time has laid beneath. We also miss the unexpected and beautiful complexities found between intentions and outcomes. When looking through layers, we see that certain features are more difficult to erase than others. Not due to their physical permanence but the stubbornness of their cultural or symbolic value.

I have used etching, aquatint and chine-colle in these works. These traditional methods remind us of the actual process of time, deterioration and definition.

My art is a place where I want to share colors, hope, the feeling of expectation of something good and joyful to happen. Memories of nature encounters combined with a curiosity for man-made environment. In my recent bigger artworks, I explore my love for birch trees, mountains and water.
